Often I move the blocks around like puzzle pieces, stepping back and evaluating before coming to a final decision about what looks visually pleasing. 3 Steps to Accurate Piecing When creating a strip-pieced quilt, there are three things to think about: 1. Accurate rotary cutting 2. Maintaining a ¼” (6mm) seam allowance 3. Pressing If your strips are cut accurately, the seam allowance is consistent and the seams are pressed as you go, the quilt will go together beautifully and without a hitch. But remember as you work that, like anything else, the more you do this, the better you will be at it.

PRESSING After each set of strips is sewn, it is important to press the seams for neat and accurate results. After each seam is complete, it must be pressed in three steps: From the back, press the seam to one side. 1. Press as sewn: Pressing is not a back-and-forth movement like ironing. Simply put the iron down onto the finished seam, lift and move to the next section until the whole seam is pressed. The heat allows the fabric to relax and makes the seam look flat with no puckers. Press from the top, flattening the rollover.

4 Place this strip right-side-up in the sewing machine with the Fabric 3 strip on the right. Place Unit 1A right-side-down on this strip set so that the Fabric 2 piece is at the top. With the right-hand raw edges aligned, sew the unit to the strip. Sew all the Unit 1A pieces to the strip sets in this way. 5 Press the seam allowances toward the Fabric 3 strip. Cut the sections apart at the edges of the units, lining up the seams with your ruler. This is now Block A. Press. Each block should measure 8½” × 12½” (22cm × 32cm).
