Once inside, the women became noticeably less chatty and with weary familiarity took the lift to the fourth ﬂoor, collected the breakfast trays labeled with their names from the waiting trolley, and sat down to eat around an oblong table in a small dining room. These women, who came from throughout the Canadian province of British Columbia, were participating in the community residential program, traveling between the hospital and the community residence each day for up to four months. The weekdays of this program were highly structured, with group therapy sessions, body image classes, communal breakfasts and lunches, weekly weigh-ins and skin-fold tests (on what the women called “hell Tuesday”), assertiveness training, and a range of other sessions.
